HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Happy Holidays!! We hope that you have had a wonderful year and that your holiday season is filled with love, joy, and lots of family time. Our family has had quite the eventful year full of challenges, triumphs, trips, family time, and hard work. This year, we thought we would share some of the highlights.

Memorial Day Weekend: Lola’s Place:

 We had quite the physical mishaps happen. First, Allen tripped and dropped a 5th wheel hitch on his hand. We spent the better part of a day in the emergency room. He broke 2 fingers and had to have over 20 stiches in 3 fingers. He also had to have a pin surgically place in his finger for it to heal. He is still mending and has a ways to go to be back to where he was.

 Justyn was playing on a trolley (zip line) at a neighbor’s cabin and fell on his foot, at the end of a line, on a steep incline and pulled all the ligaments in his foot.

 Jayson was playing night games with the other kids. They were playing kick the can and he came running in to kick the can, stepped in a hole and fell. We figured it was just a bad fall and went to bed. He was up all night crying, we left early the next morning for home and took the boys to the Instacare, the X-rays showed that Jayson had broken his femur. He was in a cast for the first 6 weeks of summer break.

 Needless to say it was a hard month. Allen couldn’t use his left hand, Justyn was on crutches, and Jayson couldn’t walk because of his cast.

Yellowstone National Park:

 Normally we go to Flaming Gorge for the 4th of July, but with Allen’s hand, we didn’t dare go camping with the pin in his hand, so we decided to take our boys to Yellowstone National Park. We stayed in West Yellowstone and spent 2 days in the park and 2 days traveling and stopping and seeing various things.

Soccer Season:

 This spring, Jayson played soccer. He absolutely loved it. He was one of the younger boys on the team, but one of the best. He scored multiple goals and had so much fun. It was fun to see him play and start enjoying team sports. Now the debate is whether or not he is going to play soccer or baseball next year.

Baseball Season:

 This year Justyn played baseball and Allen helped to coach the team. We spent many afternoons and evening at the ball park. It was hard this year with soccer and my school, but we managed. The boys had a good season. Justyn did great and got back into pitching again. It was fun to see him excel and improve.

Football Season:

 We were all excited for football to start. Justyn had and amazing season. Although as a team they struggled, personally, Justyn was tremendous. We even had coaches from other teams tell us that word was spreading about containing him defensively. Many games, Justyn was double and triple teamed on the line. When he wasn’t he was in the quarterbacks face. It was fun to see him excel.

Camping:

 We didn’t camp as much as we would have liked, but we did go on our annual hunting trips. It was so much fun to get out and enjoy the fall leaves and peace that comes with being in the mountains. We always leave wanting to be there more and more.

School:

 This has been a big year for us and school. First, I finished my Administrative and Supervisory Certificate and I maintained my 4.0 GPA. I am pretty proud of that, it was a great accomplishment for me.

 Justyn started Jr. High this year. It was a very rough transition, but he is enjoying it more now. We do get overwhelmed with keeping up with 7 different teachers, but he is getting into the groove

 Jayson started Kindergarten, can you believe it?? He loves school and loves his teacher. He is so excited every day to go. He is learning so much and enjoys doing his homework. We know that it won’t last, but we are enjoying the excitement for now.

We hope that your home is filled with the true spirit of Christmas this season. We hope that peace and joy fill your days and that the spirit of Christ is with you and your family. May we all take a moment and remember the reason for the season. We are so grateful to have you in our lives and our family. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

Love,

The DeFriez Family, Allen, Jen, Justyn, and Jayson

EASTERIN' 2012

This Easter was like most of our Easters, spent with family on the San Rafael desert camping and carrying on and creating new traditions.  The weather was a bit cold and windy.. well maybe more than a bit, Thursday and Friday were cold and windy and Saturday and Sunday were beautiful!  We didn't want to leave on Sunday, but life called us back to reality.  We really enjoyed our first camp out of the season and made some great memories!  This will definatly be an Easter to remember!

SAN ANTONIO

As part of my job, I attend a Special Education Conference 3 times a year.  This gives me the chance to see a variety of places around the country and since I love to travel, this has been great.  In February, I had the chance to go to San Antonio and my mom was able to come with me.  This is the first time that anyone has traveled with me and it was so much fun. We left early on Monday and were there until Thursday afternoon. We were able to spend quite a bit of time before and after my meetings seeing the sights.  We went to The Alamo and I have to say, I was somewhat disappointed.  I expected it to be bigger, much bigger, especially when you see it in the movies. I guess everything is bigger in Hollywood..right!  We were able to spend some time on The Riverwalk shopping and eating.  We also went on the boat (barge) ride that takes you on the river and learn about the history of the river and San Antonio.  We were hopeful that the weather would be warmer, but it wasn't it was chilly.  Overall we had a great time.  My mom and I have decided to make it tradition that she comes with me once a year.

ONCE THERE WAS A SNOWMAN!

We finally received some snow and the minute it started snowing, Jasyon wante dto go sledding adn build a snowman. When it stopped, we went out and did just that. Jayson and I built a snowman and Justyn and our cousin David built a snow fort. It was a fun few hours. It has been a long time since I took time to build a snowman. I am grateful for an active son who wants to do all of these fun things and nags me to go out and do it with him.

CHRISTMAS

Christmas was amazing this year.  I really wanted to try and create a more spiritual, meaningful, and giving Christmas this year.  I found a great way to do the 12 days of Christmas online through inspirational stories and decided to create it for our neighbors and friends and then I made on for my family.  Each night we would gather in the living room, read the story and get the token or treat that came with the story.  My boys loved this and could hardly wait each do to do it.  We did this as the last thing, before family prayer, each night. It created such a feeling of the true spirit of Christmas in our home.  Our home was more reverent and peaceful.  Christmas wasn't all about the gifts or what we were going to get or give. We were focused on service and the spirit of Christ.  I really can't wait until next year so that I can find something else to incorporate.
This is the first year, in a very long time that I can remember not having snow for Christmas.  It was eery and weird.  I think it was like 55 degrees on Christmas Day.  Christmas Eve, we took our boys out to dinner and then to Shopko for them to shop for each other.  This has been a fun tradition and the boys really like it.  After that, we drove up to the Bountiful Temple and read the story of Christ that they have around the temple and then we drove around and looked at Christmas lights.  Jayson was beside him self with anticipation.  When we got home, we set up the NORAD Santa Tracker and he sat there for almost 3 hours watching where Santa was an clicking on the spots he had been.  We also had a special visitor that stopped by.... Santa himself stopped to make sure that the boys were being good and getting ready for bed.

Christmas morning was funny. Allen and I were awake at 6:00 waiting for the boys to come and get us, we heard Justyn and then he went back in the bedroom, finally at 7:30 we decided to get them up. We had to wake up Jayson, but he was a live wire and so excited to go in a see if Santa came. Allen's dad and mom came over for a bit, it was a Sunday and they were in the special choir program so they couldn't stay long. After we opened gifts, we had breakfast and then got ready to go to Orangeville for a few days. It was such a nice morning and a beautiful celebration. I am so grateful for all that we have been given and for the joy we felt this season.

WIND STORM

We had some really rough weather hit Bountiful before Christmas.  We had a bad wind storm come through that took out trees, power lines, roofs, parts of homes, it was crazy. In our neighborhood block of 7 homes, we lost 24 large pine trees.  Allen and I were awake all night listening to the wind howl and wondering what was happening to our yard an house.  I got up around 3 and our trampoline was still up and so were all the trees.  We got back up at 5:40 when we heard a bang.... the tramp had slammed into our house between our sliding glass doors and the porch off our bedroom.  At 6:00, we heard more noises and looked outside again, the tramp had moved and was now sitting on the back porch and banging against the double doors in our bathroom.  We went outside to try and strap it down so it didn't go over our house.  This is when we noticed that 2 of our neighbors large pine trees were now in our back yard and one had crushed the swing set.  We got the 4-wheeler and strapped the tramp down to the winch to keep it in place, but the tramp enclosure was destroyed.  We also noticed that half the fence along the back had blown down or away and the fence between us and our neighbors the Brimleys' had fallen over.  This made us wonder and worry about our family in the neighborhood. We decided to go and check it out and to go downtown to see if we could get a chainsaw.  By this time Jayson was up too, so we all loaded in the car to head out.  As we got out front, we saw that our huge Colorado Blue Spruce in the front yard was down and had bend the black wrought iron fence that runs along it.  We then started noticing that the transformers through the neighborhood, and across the street were popping and exploding.... this was interesting.  We were able to get downtown, albeit strategically through downed power lines and trees. we were able to get a chainsaw and head back up to our house. By the time we got home, our power was out.  We spent the rest of the day driving around, or inside without power, we did go and get a generator in case we needed it.  It was so cold that we couldn't start working outside at all.  The next few days some amazing things happened.  First was the support and help we got from our neighbors the Auld's.  They were so wonderful to come and help clean up our yard and I am so grateful to them for this.  I think this also helped to build our friendship with them.   Next was our neighbors, Cameron Wright and his construction company, they came in with all of their big equipment and helped to clean up our neighborhood for several days. It was so amazing.  The team organized and assembled outside our home everyday and we got to see and be part of them as they went their separate ways and then would come and park their equipment.  They worked so hard and tirelessly and entirely voluntarily! They brought their big equipment in and took out all of the stumps around our yard and then went through the neighborhood doing the same.  They did this for not only their ward boundaries, but ours.  We were so blessed to have them and I hope that they received many blessings for helping. We will be getting a new roof in the spring as our shingles off the back blew off and a new swing set, tramp, and new fences.   Our yard is still in disarray with limbs and debris, but hopefully the spring will bring new energy that we can get it taken care of.  We still have a ton of work ahead!

HALLOWEEN

Halloween this year started out to be great, but ended not so great. A few weeks before Halloween we took the boys shopping for their costumes and ended up buying for the whole family. We were the Mario crew. Allen was Toad, Justyn was Mario, Jayson was Luigi , and I was Princess Peach! We were really excited as this would be the first year that we all dressed up together! The Saturday before Halloween, we took the boys to Lagoon. We were having a great time and Justyn had just won his last football game. Jayson started to complain of a belly ache and we thought it was because of the the rides. We slowed down so Allen and Justyn could go on some of the bigger rides and Jay and I watched. Jayson decided that he wanted to go the the skycoaster (the ride that goes across the whole park) I thought this would be fairly safe, so we headed over, about half way there he stopped by a garbage can and lost all of his cookies. I felt so bad. He was so sick. Needless to say, I was glad we weren't on the ride. We went back to the stroller and he laid down and fell alseep. We didn't do too much after that. Allen started to feel sick by the time we got home too. We still weren't sure if it was just the rides of the flu. At 3:00 in the morning, Justyn started and by this time, we knew that it wasn't from the rides. It hit all of us in a 24 hour period. Allen and I were so sick on Sunday and Monday. We spent the day in bed. My poor boys were starting to feel somewhat better on Monday Halloween. Normally I tale the boys to my work to trick-or-treat, but I was so weak and tired. Justyn was feeling a bit better so he went with some of his friends that night. Jayson was so excited to go, so Allen and I figured we would drive him to a few houses and call it got... NO WAY were we getting away with that. Jayson learned this year what to do and he couldn't get enough of it and he got a HAUL of candy. Allen and I didn't dress up, I was doing good to not have my PJs on. But it was fun to see the excitement that Jayson had!

FOOTBALL

One of the best things that have happened to our family this year is Justyn playing football.  I am a very proud momma!  He is amazing.  He puts on the pads and uniform and he is cut like a football player.  His coaches have been AMAZING!  There are 4 of them and only one has a boy that plays, all the rest coach because they LOVE it!  The things that they taught Justyn were great.  Not only did they teach him about football, but they taught his respect for others, himself, and the team.  They worked alot on being a good member of a team and that you always have your brothers backs.  Justyn played both offense and defense. He had several sacks.  He ended the season as the center, his friend Zach is the quarterback and wanted him in that spot.  He made so many good friends and THRIVED!!  He had a change in attitude and has been much more pleasant at home.  He decided in July that he was not going to drink anymore pop, and he has stuck to it.  He has not had a soda since July.  He has slimmed down and is in shape.  I am so proud of him and can't wait until next season.  I think he has finally found his niche!
